Dress can play a pivotal role in how a person is perceived; at the same time concealing and revealing aspects of one's identity. Artists Nick Cave (IL) and Clarina Bezzola (NY) use dress as a way to explore issues of isolation, security, and identity. Cave's "soundsuits" and matching headwear are derived from African ceremonial dress and reflect his personal experiences as an African-American male. Bezzola makes garments composed of metals and fabric that both protect and confine the wearer.
